UnitedHealth Group Updates on Change Healthcare Cyberattack

health design

Since then, we’ve seen changes to healthcare facilities ranging from daylighting and access to nature to single-bed patient rooms and thoughtful design details that can reduce falls and infections. About UsAt The Center for Health Design, we’re focused on the connection between design and health. As a non-profit organization of passionate healthcare designers and professionals, we’re dedicated to improving the quality of healthcare through design of the built environment. People who spend time outdoors on hot days, particularly those with a high level of physical exertion, are at increased risk from heat-related health outcomes. This includes farm and agricultural workers, construction workers, landscapers, military personnel, and people participating in outdoor exercise, recreation, and sports.

See how they defined and developed a new model of care for community-based treatment for individuals involuntarily committed by a civil court order for inpatient mental health treatment. Explore the benefits of community-based treatment, lessons learned (and applied) after 12 months of occupancy at the first facility completed, and gain insights gathered from surveying facility staff on successes and opportunities that can be applied in the three buildings still under construction. In industry, process-driven design might be considered in the context of manufacturing and process optimization. In the context of healthcare, process-driven design can be considered through several approaches, including Lean, Human Factors/Ergonomics, and Experience Design.

As a Facilities Director, it is a relief to be able to put trust in GDG and know that they have the hospital's best interest in mind when pursuing our projects. Through our unparalleled experience in California HCAI regulations and hands-on approach, we deliver a seamless, efficient process – delivering impactful design solutions that improve the patient care experience. According to the Pew Research Center, more Americans are working beyond the traditional retirement age of 65 than at any time since the turn of the century (Desilver, 2016).

Study characteristics

COVID-19 has given global health practitioners yet another opportunity to radically rethink how we work and engage in global health moving forward. Trends like demographics, urbanization, slower and unequal economic growth, and climate change, all pose huge challenges. Our global health goals depend on our collective efforts to problem solve, strategically take risks, and quickly iterate/adapt to spur more impactful solutions. Numerous studies have shown how the built environment can promote active living (Hooker, Cirill, & Geraghty, 2009; Sallis, 2003; Strath, Isaacs, & Greenwald, 2007). These characteristics include infrastructure such as sidewalks and traffic calming devices, as well as landscaping, land use, and overall aesthetics.

We hope that the work shared here can act as an inspiration to design and global health practitioners alike in building a shared collective vision of how design can advance and deepen health impact. There are numerous ways that the design of the built environment can foster happier, healthier and more connected lives from the design of neighborhoods to workplaces and even hospitals. Join us to explore evidence-based principles and strategies for designing for connection. Erin Peavey will be sharing her own research and stories from her podcast, Shared Space, focused on the topic.

The health giant also filed a legally required notice with the U.S. government on April 12 but made public on Thursday confirming that 13.4 million residents had information exposed. To help ease reporting obligations on other stakeholders whose data may have been compromised as part of this cyberattack, UnitedHealth Group has offered to make notifications and undertake related administrative requirements on behalf of any provider or customer. Nearly 3 decades of experience delivering high impact well-being solutions that meet your objectives. At Health Designs, our mission is to change lives and transform companies into healthier happier workplaces. Our onsite Program Coordinator acts as an extension of your organization, representing your wellness initiatives and spearheading your onsite efforts with the comprehensive backing of our Health Designs team. Our Wellbeing Coaches are experts at tapping into the barriers that hold people back, and as a result, people intrinsically shift their thinking and behaviors and move toward self-improvement.

Where an individual lives, works, plays, and learns can influence how much heat they get exposed to. Heat islands, where temperatures are hotter than surrounding areas, can often be found in city neighborhoods that have fewer trees and greenspace that provide cooling, and more pavement and dark surfaces that retain heat. The breach at Kaiser is listed on the Department of Health and Human Services’ website as the largest confirmed health-related data breach of 2024 so far.

We do this directly, by calling for design to be more fully integrated into the global public health discourse. And we do this indirectly, by creating a space for plural discourses of design for health. As is evidenced in this supplement, design, if done well, can place young and adult community members, service providers, and governments—across Ethiopia, Guatemala, Kenya, India, Nigeria, Tanzania, and Uganda—in the driver’s seat. Although the examples in this supplement draw heavily from programs in Africa, similar excellent human-centered design is ongoing across the world. In their text and through our analysis, the studies included in this review show several challenges to consider when applying Design Thinking to health care. First, there is the possibility of tension between what users want and what providers and researchers believe to be beneficial based on research and expertise (49).

These universal design concepts include case examples across the built environment (home and community, workplace, and healthcare facilities). As health care systems around the globe struggle to expand access, improve outcomes, and control costs, Health Design Thinking, second edition, offers a new approach for designing dynamic, responsive health care products and services. This practice-based guide applies design thinking to real-world health care challenges, and ideas that accelerated during the COVID-19 pandemic. A third possible tension relates to balancing the Design Thinking approach of understanding the narrative of outliers with traditional health research methods that prioritize statistics on large samples to produce generalizable results.

Kaiser spokesperson Diana Yee said that the organization would begin notifying 13.4 million affected current and former members and patients who accessed its websites and mobile apps. The notifications will start in May in all markets where Kaiser Permanente operates, the spokesperson said. “We know this attack has caused concern and been disruptive for consumers and providers and we are committed to doing everything possible to help and provide support to anyone who may need it,” said Andrew Witty, chief executive officer of UnitedHealth Group. A place where resources are housed, participants are engaged, and progress is tracked. CHIS is publicly recognized as a Charter Member of the American Association of Public Opinion Research (AAPOR) Transparency Initiative. The certification signifies a commitment to transparent survey research practice and effective disclosure of research methods.

As a project manager, you need to have the right team in place to be successful, and I am very grateful to have GDG on my team. When you have teamwork, everyone has the same goal and it shows with the end result. Given Design Group (GDG) is an architecture firm in California that specializes in the design and development of healthcare and medical facilities. The “village movement” is growing in many parts of the country as a means to bring different generations together to help aging people remain in their homes instead of moving to “old-age ghettos” (Thomas, 2011).

Our results suggest that one area where Design Thinking could be especially useful is in designing interventions for underserved populations whose needs may be overlooked by other approaches. Using Design Thinking allowed the multidisciplinary team to question assumptions and biases and develop an intervention that was successful, acceptable, and feasible to the actual users, an outcome that may not have been possible using traditional methods (21). Another study evaluated the impact of an education tool to enhance long-acting contraceptive use in a clinic serving mostly African American patients who were included early in the usability testing process to ensure the tool met their needs.

Approximately two-thirds of the interventions were mobile telephone–based or tablet-based. We reviewed selected articles using PRISMA guidelines (10,11) and entered citations into a reference manager, which removed duplicates. To be eligible for inclusion, studies had to be written in English, be published in a peer-reviewed journal, provide outcome data on a health-related intervention, and use Design Thinking in intervention development, implementation or both. They demonstrate the related conditions of cause and effect, beginning with the influence of design on global health programming processes and interventions and ending with the specific ways in which design can help create the “preconditions” necessary for achieving the goals of the global health ecosystem. Recognizing that the field of HCD is still in the process of generating the evidence necessary to more fully illustrate the theory of change pathways, they offer this work as an invitation to the field to use, experiment with, and evolve this shared framework.

Design can be applied to the development of products, services, processes, messages, digital experiences, and environments. Design can link each of these elements into a cohesive and meaningful experience, particularly in the context of fragmented health systems. While designers have contributed to health interventions in all of these areas, design as a process, is broader than a single application. Complex health challenges require a multidisciplinary set of approaches and expertise. Design can help bring diverse disciplines together in a collaborative manner to unlock new opportunities for positive change in health systems.
